Specifically, we at Allen Associates:
Avoid
standard pressure treated lumber that can leach arsenic and chromium
into the soil and groundwater, and can cause respiratory, skin
and nervous system problems.
Use
only low or zero VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints, particle
board and construction adhesives for improved indoor-air-quality.
Install
on-demand water heaters for both domestic hot water and space
heating. These heaters consume about half the energy of a standard
water heater but can supply an endless flow of hot water.
Use
recycled content materials such and engineered wood products,
plastic-wood fiber decking, and cementious-wood fiber siding
that is resistant to termites, fire, and water.
Substitute
flyash for cement in our concrete mixes for
a stronger, more water resistant product. Flyash is a waste product
from coal-fired
power plants that normally goes into landfills.
