Green Building
The size, bulk and scale did not change considerably although a 900 square foot second story, master bedroom suite was added. Incorporating green building materials and systems to create a comfortable, efficient and healthy home was another important goal of this project. The exterior features durable, low-impact fiber cement siding and roofing. The energy efficient building envelope includes high performance windows and abundant insulation. Solar panels work in concert with the efficient furnace and water heater to minimize fossil-fuel energy use. A new front door, reclaimed hardwood floors, and a refurbished wood beam ceiling and stone fireplace have revived the living room, the only piece salvaged from the original home. In addition to new cabinets, counters, lighting, and appliances, the kitchen was expanded to create a feeling of spaciousness and comfort. A new front porch, patio and roof decks encourage indoor-outdoor living. (Architect: John Kelley, AIA)
