Historic Green Remodel

Green Building

This renovation project transformed a once historical building of late 1890 vintage into a real home—durable, healthy and energy efficient.  Over its life, the structure served many functions: carriage house, stable, servants’ quarters, and, since the 1920’s, a single-family residence.  The original plan was to remodel the downstairs, but as the old stucco was removed, structural problems became evident. This necessitated a total redo, with the owners insisting that the structure’s historic character be maintained.  The old carriage door bays were fitted with large, new, dual pane windows to allow for abundant sunlight to infiltrate the entire bottom floor. Blown-in cellulose insulation and a radiant barrier also improved the overall comfort and energy efficiency of the structure. French doors and windows were installed in the kitchen, offering beautiful views of the original, still-intact water tower. Engineered oak floors grace the living and guest rooms, while tile and custom cement countertops create a modern, crisp kitchen.   The cabinetry in the kitchen and the three bathrooms is from a manufacturer known for its sustainable practices and selection of materials. Quality craftsmanship and the ability to effectively resolve the problems associated with a century of deterioration and neglect have brought life back to this historic structure, creating a beautiful and comfortable home.
